There’s no question, giving away free reports is a great email list building strategy. Not only has it stood the test of time, but also outlived many online marketing fads.

But for most marketers, this strategy is half baked.

Most marketers use the free report as mere “bait” to get a new subscriber. Yet, rarely do they use the report itself to make actual sales of the product they’re promoting.

With just 4 simple steps, you can turn your free report into something that not only helps you build your email list, but actually converts readers into buyers at the same time.

1. Add more calls to action

It sounds obvious, but it’s often overlooked. The more times you ask for the sale, inside your free report, the more chance you’ll have of making money, period.

Don’t just wait until the final paragraph, but insert links all the way though, and even include some big graphics or “interlude” pages that start raising the awareness of your product. The more times people see the offer, the more they will warm to the offer, and the more likely they will click the link and buy.

2. Include case studies, facts and other proof

Does your product have testimonials, case studies or other proof that you can mention? If so, dedicate a few pages of your free report to these proof elements.

Make it interesting with real life case studies with real stories, and people will actually enjoy reading your “disguised” sales pitch. Make sure you have links to your product after each review, case study or testimonial that you include in your report, for maximum click thru rates.

3. Offer a reader’s only coupon/discount

Your readers have taken the plunge and put their time and trust into you. Now it’s time to reward them, but not just with free content. 4. Make your report readable

One of the most overlooked and undervalued aspects of marketing is design. Design plays a huge part in how people perceive you, and how they respond to you. Poorly designed content not only loses people’s attention, but it also conveys a sense of mistrust.

There are several strategies for rewriting PLR content that you can use to speed up the creation of your own products.

Private Label Rights Articles

Even if you feel you have no writing skills, it’s easy to put together a collection of high quality PLR articles on the same subject (or PLR ebooks for that matter), and with just a few minor edits here and there, compile them together to form a short report or ebook that names you as the author.

Short Reports

Initially, you might just want to create one or two short reports as enticements to subscribe to your newsletter or mailing list; however, there is no reason why you can’t turn PLR articles in to full-fledged ebooks you can sell for cash. Of course you can also create ebooks simply to giveaway as a means of propagating your affiliate and other sales links.

Alternatively you can use the content of a PLR ebook to provide the backbone to your report, which you’ll then edit and augment with your own writing. If you’re knowledgeable in a subject, but find you never know where to start when it comes to writing, this is a great way to create something that’s unique and truly you – the private label content provides the structure and serves to provoke you into adding your own comments, clarifying explanations and deleting parts you disagree with.

Another option is to “pick and mix” from several PLR ebooks on the same subject, taking the best bits from each, and just rewriting them enough for continuity. With care this can work out really well, the end result being a unique and authoritative guide to a subject.

Here’s a tip: If you compile your work into defined, stand-alone chapters or sections, each time you finish one, you can sell it as a short report while you’re still working on the rest of the book! Here you’re basically working in reverse. Instead of combining PLR content to create a new, unique product of your own, take a private label ebook and condense it down to the essentials. Trim away all the “fat” by deleting any text that isn’t vitally important and reducing long paragraphs of information into concise bullet-points.

Sometimes you may even find entire chapters that aren’t really necessary, or end up with chapters that are so short after deleting content that you can combine several together under a new heading. If your PLR ebook covers several aspects of a subject, you might decide you only want to focus on one of them.

Of course you don’t have to create an ebook or report from the edited PLR material. You can just as easily use your new condensed content to create totally unique articles for use on your website or elsewhere.
